Gregorians U18s kick off season with goalless draw
Manchester Gregorians 0 Colne FC 0
17 August 2014
North West Youth Alliance Division Two at Platt Lane, Fallowfield
The first game of the new FETA partnership with Manchester Gregorians ended in a goalless draw in typical Manchester conditions.
In a match that proved be hard fought in the middle of the park, neither side could find the decisive quality to finish the few chances made by either team.
The match did however start brightly for Gregs, with an early interchange of passing in the first few minutes seeing James Newell played clean through, before the ref decided instead to pull the game back for an earlier foul. The resulting free-kick was unable to find a decisive head, and instead landing harmlessly out for a goal-kick.
The rest of the half played out rather uneventfully, with neither side able to get a grip on the game and any chances coming from distance. The best fell to Liam Turner after he worked himself space away from the full back and midfielder and drove towards goal, but he was unable to convert his chance.
Half-time came at the wrong time for Gregs and the second-half was mostly uneventful, with just a few half-chances presenting themselves. The defence remained tight and well organised as Colne advanced and the lads absorbed all that was thrown at them very well.
The game finished off as a deserved and justified nil-nil, to get the season off with a point.
