Wythenshawe Amateurs 2 Manchester Gregorians 0
Saturday, 2nd February 2013
The Wythenshawe Club, Longley Lane, Northenden
After an enforced break due to the postponement of matches because of snow and ice, there was an expectation that Gregs would hit the ground running against Wythenshawe Amateurs. The Amateurs are not the power they once were in the Manchester League and, after this performance one would have to admit, nor are we.
Both teams struggled to take any control of the game in a scrappy first half, though at least Gregs played the better football in two-thirds of the pitch. While Amateurs relied on long-ball breakaways, Gregs' overall play was more refined but, as on many occasions this season, failed to threaten in the final third.
After the break, Gregs quickly lost even the limited direction and purpose of the first half. A tame cross from the right flank was not dealt with and Amateurs were 1-0 up after just five minutes. Gregs huffed and puffed to little avail, and were ultimately undone by a long kick down the middle and a simple rounding of a stranded keeper.
Substitutions to inject some pace into the performance spluttered into life and then stalled. A good shout for a handball in the area ten minutes from time might have encouraged a fightback from Gregs, but the referee waved play on and with that Gregs waved goodbye to another three points.
